Water is the basis of all life. We human beings owe to this blessing of nature. However, once the water circulation doesn’t work well, our lives won’t be able to stand. It says that the water we can usually use is only just 0.01% of all the earth’s water. To get this benefit of this precious natural blessing permanently, we have been thinking how to make good use of water. Then, we started building dams.
Dams have been played the important parts for flood controlling. In spite of the efforts, the flood disasters brought huge damages to us and they frequently happen everywhere. In 2014, in Hiroshima, Japan, they had the largest rainstorm in recorded history and many houses collapsed because of it. The following year, the heavy rain caused severe flooding after river embankments collapsed in Kanto and Tohoku region in Japan. In 2017, they had 545.5 millimeters of downpours in Kyushu region and over 300 millimeters in Akita prefecture. It caused extensive damages then. However, droughts also occur year after year.
Those disasters are caused by the climate changing which is far beyond our assumption. I think using fossil fuels lead the global warming, too. We need to face current nature’s force and put together our wisdom and power to maintain dams. This is the only way to get back the stable water circulation to us again.
The dam construction would destroy nature, on the other hand, they can restore nature and generate electricity. With our experiences and knowledges, I think we can stem the tide of huge water damage. While seeing water controlled by the dams, I really hope that all concerned engineers of civil engineering and construction industry will help us to have the stable water circulation.
